Nanoprep 2016 Day 7: Guy Talk
By Robin de Voh on 2016-10-17
Danny sat down on the couch, opposite Kevin, and turned on the music. He dropped the remote on the table and sat back.
"Dude, how long has it been?"
"I dunno, 2 months or so?"
Danny grabbed a glass of wine and held it up.
"To meeting up again, then."
Kevin smirked but held up his glass as well.
"You know, most people wouldn't consider 2 months to be a very long time to not have a chat," he said.
"True, but I used to see you every week. I miss you, guy," Danny said with a grin.
"Aww, gross. But yeah, same."
Their glasses clinked together.
"Not the manliest of drinks, though," Danny said with a mocking tone.
"Screw you, I had a bottle and it's a good bottle and you shut up and drink now."
Danny laughed and took a sip.
"Alright, it is good. So, what's up?"
"Not much," Kevin said after taking a sip himself. "Josie moved out."
"Whoa, so it's final?"
"As final as it'll ever be, I guess."
Kevin's smile subsided, and he looked lost in thought.
"You know," he started, "I don't think me and her were supposed to be. It was great, honestly, but after a while we were just friends, y'know?"
"Yeah, I know that. Me and Rebecca had the same. We enjoyed spending time together, but romance? That left before either of us did."
"Exactly. And that's kinda what tore away at us, I guess. We both came to the same conclusion, just not at the same time."
"Hey, is that why you stopped showing up?"
Kevin looked at Danny.
"Kinda? I just wasn't in the mood to have to explain why things weren't as peachy as before, I guess."
"If you'd just told us to we wouldn't have asked you about it, you know that."
"But you'd known. And also, I didn't want to put that responsibility on you guys."
"Hmm," Danny said while grabbing the remote. "You're right. It would've bothered us."
He aimed the remote at the old hifi set and lowered the volume.
"That's a great song," Kevin said.
"Yeah, it is."
They sat in silence for a while.
"So, what's next?" Danny asked.
"I dunno. Get used to being single again? Kinda want to figure out who to be after 10 years of being part of a team."
"Gotcha. So... You going to show up weekly again?"
"Fuck yes."
They high-fived and regretted it only a little.
"Good to have you back, man."
"Hey, at least there's something positive about all this. Good to be back."
Their glasses clinked together again.
"So girly," Danny said, grinning.
"Oh, shush. You know you like it."
